Planning a family vacation can feel overwhelming, especially when traveling with little ones. Between packing, preparing, and making sure you have everything you need, it’s easy to feel stressed before the trip even begins. But with the right system in place, you can get everything done without the last-minute chaos.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through my step-by-step method for packing and preparing for a traveling with kids (whether it’s a flight or a road trip), so you can relax and enjoy your trip! Plus, I’ve created a free printable checklist to help you stay on track.
Step 1: One Week Before Travel – Get Organized
At this point, I start prepping everything so that I’m not scrambling at the last minute. Here’s what I do:
– Check the weather at your destination and adjust packing plans accordingly.
– Make a packing list for each family member, including must-have items like travel documents, toiletries, and medications.
– Plan travel outfits and laundry needs—make sure the kids’ favorite outfits are clean!
– Order any last-minute travel essentials like snacks, wipes, or travel-sized toiletries.
– Start setting aside travel-friendly entertainment (coloring books, tablets, headphones).
Step 2: Five Days Before – Packing Essentials
This is when I start actually packing and laying everything out.
– Pull out suitcases and packing cubes (these are game-changers for keeping things organized).
– Pack bulkier items first—think shoes, jackets, and diapers.
– Set aside carry-on must-haves like snacks, extra clothes, and comfort items for kids.
– Charge all electronics and download movies/shows for entertainment.
Step 3: Two Days Before – Finalizing Details
– Double-check travel documents (passports, boarding passes, hotel confirmations).
– Confirm transportation plans—rides to/from the airport, car rentals, etc.
– Pack a “first-day” bag with essentials for the first 24 hours in case of delays.
– Stock up on snacks… because hungry kids + travel delays = no fun (same for moms + dads!)
Step 4: The Day of Travel – Last-Minute Checklist
– Make sure chargers, IDs, and travel documents are in your bag.
– Get the kids dressed in comfy, layer-friendly outfits.
– Give everyone a good meal before heading out.
– Do one final sweep of the house for anything forgotten.
